Set in the 1920s-30s in Chicken Hill, Pottstown, Pennsylvania, this novel follows a Black and Jewish immigrant community living side by side. Central are Moshe Ludlow, his wife Chona (who runs the grocery store), their friend Nate Timblin, and a deaf Black boy named Dodo whom they work together to hide from the state authorities threatening to institutionalize him. Interwoven with love, racism, music, and secret histories—including a skeleton discovered decades later—the story explores how solidarity, faith, and community confront injustice.
