Set on the beautiful but turbulent Korean island of Jeju, The Island of Sea Women tells the story of two young women, Young-sook and Mi-ja, whose lives become deeply connected through friendship, family, and the sea.

As members of the haenyeo, Jeju’s remarkable female divers, the women learn to dive into dangerous waters to harvest seafood and provide for their families. Their friendship carries them through marriage, motherhood, war, loss, and the changing world around them. But as political conflict and violence reach their island, painful secrets and difficult choices begin to threaten everything they have built.
