In Mr Salary, Sally Rooney explores the complicated relationship between Sukie and Nathan, a much older man with whom she has a long and unconventional history. When Sukie returns home after being away, she finds herself drawn back into Nathan’s orbit. Their relationship is familiar but difficult to explain, shaped by emotional dependence, attraction, intimacy, and a history that neither of them seems entirely capable of leaving behind.
