Maddie Wright—nicknamed “Maame” (Twi for “woman” or “mother”) by her Ghanaian mother—is a 25‑year‑old Londoner who’s spent most of her life playing caretaker. She supports her father, who has Parkinson’s disease, holds down a stifling personal assistant job, pays the bills, and endures her mother’s emotional manipulation from afar.

When her mother finally returns to Ghana for an extended stay, Maddie takes a long-awaited leap toward independence—moving out, trying online dating, and asserting her identity—only for tragedy to force her to reassess what she truly wants and who she is.
